Free hairdressing lessons for refugees

Scissors, combs, spray, Mannequins and let's get started! From the beginning of October, we started a new series of free hairdressing courses for refugee women. Every Thursday our students from Iran and Ukraine learn the most sought-after haircuts, under the guidance of experienced Canadian hairstylist Kim.

The space is buzzing with life and excitement; however, communication can be challenging. It is often done through mobile translation tools, proving that "where there's a will, there's a way.”

"There is no better feeling than learning something new," says Iranian Parisa, who is eager to learn hairdressing well so that she can use it professionally along with other beauty services and be able to earn an income. On the other hand, Liudmila, from Ukraine, explains that she simply enjoys good company during the course and stresses how important it is for her to feel that she belongs to a community.

Lili Ball, the center's manager, does not want the women to just learn an art, but approaches them with care and love, interested in their overall well-being. "Before the class starts, we hang out. Women express themselves openly and gain fellow travelers on the - challenging - journey of life."
