Alongside the homeless

Who would have imagined that an 82-year-old homeless grandfather, unshaven with a broken leg, once was a mathematician at a university when he was younger? We met him on the streets of Athens, with our volunteer group that helps homeless people in the city center, and had a chat with him. When we asked him what his needs were and how we could help him, he replied that he needed a blanket because it was very cold, and he had nothing to cover himself with.

Shortly afterwards, we found a shop that sold blankets, quilts and rugs. We noticed a nice, warm, soft blanket and asked how much it cost. But before we gave the money to the saleswoman, she asked us why we wanted it. We explained to her the reason as well as the purpose of our group. She was touched and did not accept any money, but chose to donate it to us! Excited, we went back and gave the blanket to the gentleman, who was very happy with his new acquisition and asked us to cover him with it.

There are people in need right next to us. Since we can easily help our fellow humans and make them happy, even for a little while, why not try to?
