Saaede: “Reading and writing changed my life”

"I can finally send messages to my family and friends, read a book or go online! It's the best feeling," says with a big smile 35-year-old Afghan Saaede, who is learning to read and write at our center in downtown Athens.

She had never been to school in Afghanistan, but for the past year and a half she has been taking Farsi and English lessons and now a new world of knowledge has opened before her. "I want to become independent and take care of things that concern me on my own, like filling out documents," she says eagerly.

Her next goal is to learn another language after she has mastered reading and writing in her native one. Perhaps, one from a potential future country of residence, as she knows that only once she can speak the local language will she be able to find a job and at the same time feel at home.

Saade has two boys, 3 and 7 years old, who are very proud of their mom. The eldest is so excited and happy, he told her that he will pray for her so that she will have strength when she reads!

In addition to the classes and practical support, Saaede attends the trainings we have for arts and crafts and fabric dyeing - the latter of which she believes may pave the way for her to find a job in the clothing industry.

We are very proud of Saade's perseverance and her love of learning, which is a shining example to us all!
